Die ethno-historische Studie dokumentiert die mythischen Überlieferungen, Traditionen und die Geschichte der Nagerkuts, einem Bergvolk aus dem Karakorum-Gebirge / Nordpakistan. Der Autor reist seit den 1980er Jahren in die Region und schildert die Lebenswelt eines Volkes, das bis 1972 als eines der letzten Sakralkönigreiche der Welt existierte.
Das Bergvolk der Nagerkuts lebt am Fuße des „Feenberges“ Rakaposhi im Karakorum-Gebirge im Norden Pakistans. Diese ethno-historische Studie dokumentiert die mythischen Überlieferungen, Traditionen und die bislang nur mündlich überlieferte Geschichte dieses Volkes. Bis 1972 war Nager eines der letzten Sakralkönigreiche der Welt, das seine Bewohner wegen seiner Fruchtbarkeit stolz als das „Land von Gold und Aprikosen“ bezeichnen. Die langjährigen Feldforschungen des Autors in diesem entlegenen Teil Nordpakistans gewähren Einblicke in die Lebenswelt der Nagerkuts, ihre bäuerliche Kultur sowie die Riten ihrer indigenen, prä-modernen Religion.
Till 1972, Nager was one of the last sacral kingdoms of the world. Its inhabitants proudly call their native area ‘the land of gold and apricots’. The present ethno-historic study seeks to reconstruct the past with special emphasis on oral traditions about processes of settlement. It also examines facets of local culture, such as agrarian feasts, aspects of indigenous pre-modern religion, Twelver-Shi?a Islam, lifecycle rites and local cuisine.
Grounded in long-term fieldwork, Jürgen Wasim Frembgen, a renowned anthropologist, Islamic scholar and writer, investigates the myths, traditions and folklife of the Nagerkuts living at the foot of the ‘fairy mountain’ Rakaposhi in the Karakoram (Northern Pakistan). According to the indigenous world-view, fairies are thought to reside on this majestic mountain.

By and large, this is an outstanding and much-needed book that should be considered essential reading for any scholar aiming to gain a deeper understanding of the rich culture and history of this fascinating high mountain region. Today, most of the “local masters of memory” (p. 188), the knowledge of whom this book is based, have already passed away. Thus, this book makes a critical contribution to the preservation of a great treasure of oral history and traditional knowledge in Nager that would otherwise be irrevocably lost.
